Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan PAGE 15B Saturday, October 4, 2008 DISCOVERYDedication2008 The Yankton Bridge In honor of the dedication of the Meridian Bridge in 1924, Joseph Mills Hanson a well-known author, soldier, poet, lyricist and historian wrote a poem that lauded not only the conquering of the Missouri River but also the spirit of the people who saw the project through to its successful completion. The poem was printed in the PRESS & DAKOTAN S special bridge section, published Oct. 11, 1924. Today, as a new bridge prepares to replace the old, we reprint Hanson s poetic words as a link between past accomplishments and future visions. * * * THE YANKTON BRIDGE Strike deep its footings to the living rock; Bolt firm its trusses high above the tide, To stem the flood and break the ice-floe s shock, The tempest s wrath to bide. This is the hope our fathers labored for, A causeway for the feet of years to be. Built it a tribute to their faith of yore, A pledge of destiny. The roseate visions that their young hearts dreamed Saw homes on all the vacant prairies rise And Coronado s Seven Cities gleamed Before their ardent eyes. Hope outran fate. But where they pioneered Broad highroads mark the slender trails they planned; The prairies bloom; in brick and mort reared Their visioned cities stand. We hold their heritage. To us is given Fulfillment. Through time s slowly opened gates Is born the day for which the past has striven On which the future waits. No fool s dream this, to span the floods that part A continent, and stretch a highway forth, Binding, across the nation s inmost heart, Fair South and ruddy North. Here meet the paths of lands diversely blest Where pine and mesquite, wheat and cotton grow, And link the prairies of the great Northwest With languid Mexico. The trading-post that fronts the blizzard s blast, Tamaulipas thatched huts, uncouth and frail, Nebraska farmstead, Texas ranch-house, cast Their shadows on the trail. Deep calls to deep; across the far rolled plain Galveston s blooming surf and shattered spray Greet Winnipeg s blue waves; the Spanish Main Shouts hail to Hudson s Bay. Before our gates the spear-straight road will leap The vast Missouri, borne on singing spans A bridge of Xerxes o er the waters sweep For modern caravans. Brace well each girder, shape each massive tower Against the stream and time s corroding test; Our city s covenant of growth and power Sealed to the Golden West! By Joseph Mills Hanson (1924) PHOTO: LORETTA SORENSEN Jan Garrity, director of Yankton Area Arts Association, has organized a collection of bridge photos that is part of the traveling Meridian Bridge exhibit that will be displayed in the Yankton community through Oct. 11. The photo display is made up of images submitted by area photographers for a YAAA photo contest this past summer. The display also includes memorabilia loaned by the Dakota Territorial Museum and books that are part of the Yankton Community Library collection.
