Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan PAGE 17B Saturday, October 4, 2008 DISCOVERYDedication2008 PHOTO: CATHERINE CLATWORTHY ABOVE: The glow of the rising sun provides a gentle backdrop for the Meridian Bridge in this photo supplied by Catherine Clatworthy. BELOW: Before the Meridian Bridge was in place, rickety pontoons were used to allow travelers to shakily pass over the waters. In this vintage photo supplied by Richard Davis, the pilings of the Meridian Bridge can be seen in the background while the mode of infrastructure the bridge would replace lurks in the foreground. P&D FILE PHOTO Of course, the Meridian Bridge has always been something more than an expanse of concrete and steel across the Missouri River. For many people, it is a work of art that exudes spectacular beauty in any weather and at any time of the day. The above photo captures the old bridge just after sunset in late autumn 2007 and the bridge wouldn t be the bridge if travelers weren t using it. The photo at left, courtesy of Kathy Quick, shows the silvery Meridian Bridge seeming right at home in an icy, wintry setting. PHOTO: RICHARD DAVIS BELOW: This photo from the Press & Dakotan archives shows construction crews building the steel skeleton of the Meridian Bridge. In many ways, the image particularly the high arms of the cranes is reminiscent of what many people have seen the past 18 months as the Discovery Bridge quickly took shape. PHOTO: KATHY QUICK PHOTO: JO GIESE Proud to be a Part of the Yankton Community! ABOVE: A sign of the times for the Meridian Bridge, billed as a Million Dollar Bridge that could take travelers anywhere without interruption from the Missouri River. P&D ARCHIVE PHOTO LEFT: This vintage postcard featuring the Meridian Bridge shows the structure with its original upper railing. This postcard image was provided by Clifford Larson.
