The sign behind her details the toll rates for the various vehicles crossing the river expanse at Yankton. Giese had special access to such items as the toll-taker s hat and the change maker because her father, Art Hitchman, worked in the toll both and was a maintenance man on the bridge. The tollbooth went along for the ride as the middle section rose up to let the watercraft pass. PHOTO: JIM GEVENS For 29 years, a tollbooth was perched on Meridian Bridge as Yankton patiently worked to pay down the $1.3 million debt incurred when the bridge was built and opened in 1924. The above photo shows the tollbooth decked out for the Christmas holidays sometime during the early 1940s. At left, the tollbooth can be seen atop the bridge during the summer months.
