Construction moves forward on new fire station Sparking support for a second fire station in Yankton was a lengthy process, but work is now well under way on the project. Planning for a second station on Yankton s north side dated back to the 1980s. However, it wasn t until the late2000s that those plans came to fruition. Yankton voters approved a $190,000 annual property-tax opt-out for the next 20 years by a 56 percent to 44 percent margin in April 2008 to fund the second fire station. Mannes Architects and FEH Associates were selected as the architects for the project, and James Steel Erection was awarded a $1.6 million contract to build it. The opt-out (for this fire station) was passed in tough economic times, and it s going to be built in even tougher economic times, Fire Chief Tom Kurtenbach told a crowd gathered this past March at 23rd Street and Douglas Avenue for a groundbreaking ceremony. To me, that s a testament to the citizens of Yankton. It s also an investment in the volunteers that dedicate their time to the fire department. Advocates of the new fire station have cited a variety of reasons for needing the second facility. Among them were saving lives and property by improving response times; covering target hazards; OCTOBER 4-10 taking care of emergency management issues; solving storage/space needs; possibly reducing fire insurance rates in the city; and getting an equal footing with other first-class cities in South Dakota. The new station will have office and training space, as well as a kitchen. Fire response equipment will be stored there, and at the current station in downtown Yankton. The department also completed a station near Lewis and Clark Lake west of Yankton in recent years where equipment is stored to speed up response times for that area. By August, officials said construction was moving along at a good pace on the second station in Yankton. Floors were being poured. Heating and cooling systems were being installed. Work was also being done on the electrical and plumbing systems. The department hopes to move into the facility well before the contracted completion date of May 1, 2010. by Nathan Johnson Photos by Heidi Henson Save Up To $3,375 with Rebates & Tax Credits on Carrier Home Comfort Systems 12 Months No Interest Financing to Qualified Buyers* FREE ESTIMATES! *See Larry for complete details HEATINGYankton, SD 665-9461 & COOLING 920 Broadway, 10 HERVOICE SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2009
