NUTRITION Healthy Breakfast, Healthy Snacks Makes Healthy Kids It s back to school time for kids, and that means they are going to be busier, more active (both physically and mentally) and more in need of a healthier life style. Kids these days are busy, there is no doubt about that. With school, homework and extracurricular activities, there are never enough hours in the day. One way to make sure your child stays healthy and energized is to ensure they are eating a healthy breakfast and healthy snacks throughout the day. Breakfast is the most commonly skipped meal of the day by children, but it also happens to be the most important. Studies have shown that kids who eat a healthy breakfast do better in school with improved test scores, better behavior and improved performance in activities and sports. If you are pressed for time, try these quick and easy breakfast ideas: Instant oatmeal topped with almonds and raisins Scrambled eggs with cottage cheese and fresh fruit Whole wheat bagel topped with your favorite low fat cream cheese, peanut butter or apple butter Low fat vanilla yogurt topped with fresh or canned fruit and granola Healthy after school and between meal snacks should also be an important part of every child s day. Snacks help your child meet their daily energy and nutrient needs, give them a mental boost, as well as provide that extra oomph to get them (and you) through their busy days. When providing snacks for your children, it is important to know their eating schedule. When to serve a snack and what to serve depends on how much they eat at regular meals and how long they go SNACKS continued on page 22 A successful team is a group of many hands but of one mind.
