It s easy to pinpoint that Jim and Cheryl Peterson Halsey of rural Springfield are free spirits. After driving down their long, winding driveway, a sign notes Hippies Use Back Door. No Exceptions. Once inside their home, a renovated church that once housed worship services, weddings and community activities in the now-ghost town of Kingsburg, you can t help but admire the Halseys decorating style that relies on repurposing old and found items and showcases their appreciation of art. The main portion of the home, the original church building that was moved to the farm in 1990 and used as Cheryl s art studio for many years, houses the living/dining room, kitchen and a basement with guest rooms and a 3/4 bath. In 2007, the Halseys added a master bedroom suite, a spare bedroom, another bathroom, an art studio and a two-car garage to the structure. Cheryl, who works as an artist-in-residence and creates artwork and jewelry out of her home studio, used pieces from their former home to decorate the new house. A lot of the items were in the old house, you just didn t notice them as much because they weren t displayed as nicely, Cheryl said. In the spare bedroom, Cheryl used items her now-deceased mother, Eleanor Peterson, had rosemaled as a theme. A decorative hutch hangs prominently on the wall and a Scandinavian gnome grins at guests. Cheryl continues to showcase her creative abilities with a palm frond mural in the northeast corner of the master bedroom. It s nice to wake up to every morning, she said. The room also features draperies and a headboard she designed in vibrant colors and rich fabrics with a Mediterranean feel. All of the draperies and window treatments in the house were designed and made by Cheryl, with help from her grown children, April (Halsey) Smith and Travis Halsey. I was really lucky, she said. About the time I was getting ready to do all the windows, Hancock Fabric in Yankton was closing. I got all kinds of wonderful fabric, really cheap. The great room features an oversized dining room table with royal-like chairs and a place to relax with a built-in entertainment center. The church had several stained glass windows, most of which have been removed, but the morning and afternoon light still streams through the stained glass windows in the kitchen. The kitchen also features mementos of the past, including Cheryl s great-aunt s silverware that hangs in the south window. These are the actual spoons and forks from her kitchen, Cheryl said. They are all worn on the same side from using cast iron cookware. She didn t have many pieces of silver so they used these every day. The basement features a unique floor mural that Cheryl designed in the wet cement. HOME continued on page 14 Top: The Halsey s living room once served as the chapel when the home was a church. After purchasing the home, the chapel became Cheryl s studio. Bottom: The kitchen features several stained glass windows. Just below one of the stained glass windows hang mementos of the past pieces of Cheryl s great-aunt s silverware. The pieces show wear on the same side from being used in cast iron pots.
