HEALTH H1N1 Flu Virus Take precautions, get vaccinated With school back in session and the flu season around the corner, more concern over the H1N1 virus has been vocalized the last few weeks. The end of August saw the number of confirmed cases in South Dakota rise to 105, and Nebraska reported their third death related to the virus. The H1N1 or swine flu virus became international news in early 2009 when cases in Mexico spread to other parts of the world. Jan Johnson, Infection Control Coordinator with Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, says the symptoms of this particular virus is not much different than the common seasonal flu fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue. But with the H1N1 virus, doctors are also seeing nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. There have been cases where people are not experiencing much of a fever, if any fever at all, adds Johnson. According to the South Dakota Department of Health, those infected can be contagious a day before their symptoms appear and up to seven days after they become sick. Those who are sick with the virus need to stay home for seven days after their symptoms begin, or until they are symptom-free for 24 hours. Since the virus can survive on surfaces for 2-8 hours, it is recommended that you disinfect the home or office with chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, detergent, and/or alcohol. There are some simple precautions, Johnson said, people can take at home, school and work to prevent the spread of the virus. The most important is having good hand hygiene something that should be exercised on a regular basis. It may seem too obvious, but if you think about it, how many times do you really wash your hands a day? Do you wash your hands, or sanitize them, after you cough or sneeze? Experience The Movie Theater On 65 HDTV With Complete Surround Sound Right From Your Own Home! If you're coughing or sneezing into your hands, it s a good idea to clean them, Johnson reminds. The virus is spread from person to person through coughing or sneezing. So it only makes sense to wash your hands often, or use the hand gels. Johnson says it is also a good idea to cough into a tissue and then dispose of the tissue. Many people set the tissue on their desk or back in their pockets, not thinking that it contains germs that could lead to the flu. There are just some things we don t think about in our day-to-day activities. Keeping your hands away from your face is also advised. A lot of us do it, says Johnson, when we are talking to others or intensely working on something. We can inoculate ourselves with different viruses when we put our hands up to our noses, she adds. Johnson also recommends that if you are not feeling well stay home. People often drag themselves to work no matter how sick they are. The thing is you come to work because you feel you are needed, but then you spread it around, says Johnson. Especially if you have a fever, you need to stay home. If you have a fever, you re going to be spreading it. Johnson also suggests that you get vaccinated for the seasonal flu NEW AT...
