FEATURE Johnson finds fullfillment at fire department Jody Johnson didn t expect to be a firefighter when she grew up. So it was just as much a surprise to her as to anyone else when she made history by becoming the first female firefighter in Vermillion and the second female firefighter in Yankton. A friend of mine growing up her dad was a firefighter, so we would occasionally go to the fire station and get a ride on one of the trucks. But it wasn t really a big deal, said Johnson, who serves as the Yankton County Clerk of Courts. As far as me saying, I want to be a firefighter when I grow up, that didn t really happen. It wasn t until I got involved with Emergency Medical Services in Vermillion that it sparked my interest. Now nearly 15 years into her firefighting career, the Hastings, Neb., native can t imagine her life if she hadn t taken that leap. Being a firefighter is how she met her fianc , gained a second family and found a rewarding way to give back to the community. In the beginning, Johnson was just looking for more to do in Vermillion. I took emergency medical technician classes, and I joined the ambulance service there, she recalled.
