s 150th Anniversary have a lot of mainstream success, Russell said. They have charted in the top 20 on several mainstream charts, and they have been Grammy nominated. Kory and the Fireflies are a regional favorite that has gained a national reputation, Russell said. They have a lot of songs that have gotten a lot of exposure and nationwide play, he stated. They have been part of various performance tours, and some of their music has been individually featured. They have performed at Riverboat Days, so people are familiar with them here. And the Saturday concert could start even earlier with a larger lineup, Russell said. We are looking at adding more. We might have five or six (acts) on Saturday, he said. We are trying to find more entertainment. We think people want to enjoy the bands and be part of the anniversary. The line-ups should provide a big draw each night, Russell said. I think a number of the bands have national exposure and will pull people from out of town, he said. Our first interest is the local community and putting on something of interest for their celebration, but we will definitely pull from the region. The concerts should offer something for everyone, Russell said. We are trying to focus on something that Yankton has not experienced before, he said. The weekend will also feature a Yankton historical pageant coordinated by Lewis and Clark Theatre, Russell said. A pageant was part of Yankton s centennial in 1961, he said. The early June celebration should draw a large crowd, according to Lisa Scheve, executive director of the Yankton Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). I think summer is a great time to have it, she said. It will work really well for the community, looking at the summer schedule. We welcome people from throughout the area, and we have people who formerly lived in the community who have moved away and want to help us celebrate the 150th. The Big Birthday Bash weekend provides a major focal point for the sesquicentennial, but events will be held throughout the year, Scheve said. We like to think of it as a year-long celebration that will take place through all of 2011, she said. We have a number of different entities who are turning 150 and holding special events. There will be a few additional events that pop up. Russell likewise expects to see more events scheduled throughout the year. There are a variety of different milestones for the community. We anticipate that others will join the celebratory spirit, he said. It s a chance for people to enjoy it and know it as something to remember.
