Yankton A Target For Archery World By Nathan Johnson nathan.johnson@yankton.net In case you haven t heard, Yankton has made itself a target for the archery world. In 2008, the National Field Archery Association (NFAA) moved its headquarters from Redlands, Calif., to Yankton. The area had already hosted several NFAA tournaments and, with the prompting of NFAA president and Yankton resident Bruce Cull, the organization decided the move would be beneficial. Located on the east side of Yankton just south of Highway 50, the NFAA has built a sprawling paradise for archery enthusiasts. It includes the Easton Sports Development Foundation Training Center, an Olympic field and five, 28-target field ranges. The NFAA has also opened a KOA campground on its premises. The organization has already brought thousands of visitors to Yankton for tournaments, as well as legendary rock musician Ted Nugent s Kamp for Kids, and that trend is only expected to grow. In 2010, the NFAA and the City of Yankton announced a partnership that they hope will produce an Olympic gold medalist. An 2 Off Your Check $ (Dine In Only) OPEN Mon-Fri 5pm Sat & Sun 4pm effort is under way to get the NFAA headquarters designated as a Community Olympic Development Program. Ever since the NFAA moved to Yankton, it has been a continuing effort to capitalize on their presence here, City Manager Doug Russell told the Yankton City Commission in 2010. We had discussions previously this year, including during discussions in Washington with the federal delegation, revolving around the Community Olympic Development Program. The United States Olympic Committee has partnered with sport groups across the nation to create six such programs that provide training in fencing, weightlifting, judo and a variety of other activities. None of them offer archery. Cull believes Yankton could be the first to do so with the lobbying efforts being put into place. He said Jim Easton, who is a member of the United States Olympic Committee and was involved in the decision to have Yankton as the location of the Easton Sports Development Foundation s first archery training center, is excited about the idea. It was his first baby, Cull told the City Commission in 2010. I think what we re doing here is something that is going to get us to the front of the pack. Something great can come out of this for the whole community. It s one of those things where it could springboard into so many other events, activities and development, Russell added. Cull said that, with the partnerships involved in the effort, Yankton appears to more than meet the criteria for being eligible for a Community Olympic Development Program. In 2011, the NFAA headquarters will host a variety of events in Yankton, including the 2011 First Dakota Classic from April 16-17; the 2011 NFAA National Unmarked 3D Championship from April 16-17; the USAA National Field Championship from July 22-24; the 2011 NFAA National Field Championship from July 25-27; the USAA National Target Championship from July 27-30; and the Hoyt World Open on July 30. 23rd & d Broadway VISITORS GUIDE YANKTON, SOUTH DAKOTA 25
