Press & Dakotan/2011 Lewis & Clark Lake Guide and crisscross through Fantle Memorial Park. This beautiful tree shaded park is home to the outdoor pool, parent/child wading pool, tennis and basketball courts, 18-hole disc golf course, sand volleyball court, eight horseshoe pits, playground equipment, picnic shelters and abundant open space. At the center of the park is a memorial to veterans who have served our country, as well as two time capsules. Gavins Point Nature Trail - 1.2 miles, hiking trail, natural wood chip and dirt surface. Winding through native woods, across meadows and past scenic overlooks, this trail will add interest and enjoyment to your Lewis & Clark Lake visit. Through the wetlands of Gavins Bay, you may see beaver and waterfowl. Deer, turkeys, rabbits and squirrels can be found on the way to the top of Gavins Point. A scenic overlook at the top of the trail offers a beautiful view of the lake and the chalk rock bluffs along with a beautiful gazebo to rest. A shelter and interpretive panel are available for your enjoyment at the top of Gavins Point. This trail is located at the west edge of the Lewis & Clark Recreation Area in the Gavins Point section. Highway 52 Trail - 3.14 miles, 8 wide asphalt, flat with one moderate incline exceeding five percent. Ride between Yankton and the Lewis & Clark Lake area on this trail, which parallels Highway 52 from West City Limits Road to the Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery and Aquarium. This section connects the city trail system to trails found along Lewis & Clark Lake. Many lake-area businesses can be found adjacent to the trail along this stretch. James River Trail 4.3 miles, 5 wide, paved for one mile and flat from Rotary Park along East 7th Street, Highway 50, Ferdig Avenue and East 8th Street. The primitive and scenic trail continues from East 8th Street out to the James River and has various grades, including moderate to fairly steep inclines. tion that provides a breathtaking view of Lewis & Clark Lake from the top of a cliff. Lewis & Clark Lake Trail - 6.9 miles, including loops, 8 wide asphalt, flat grade. This scenic trail winds from the Pierson Ranch Recreation Area and throughout the Lewis & Clark Recreation Area. The north side of the trail will take you through forested areas, while the south side follows along Lewis & Clark Lake. Beaches, boat docks, playgrounds, campgrounds and picnic shelters line the trail. Resting areas with benches offer beautiful views of the lake and water fountains can be found at many points along the trail. Toe Road / Training Dike Trail 2.9 miles, on-road trail, flat grade. Hop off the paved trail where it intersects with Toe Road to take a ride below Gavins Point Dam and along Lake Yankton. Adjacent to this on-road trail you will find Cottonwood Campground, Chief White Crane Recreation Area, the Training Dike, Gavins Point Dam spillway, Pierson Ranch Recreation Area, playgrounds, beaches, boat docks, fishing piers, picnic shelters and the Missouri River. Majestic Bluffs Trail - .5 miles, 10 wide concrete, flat grade. Located near the Majestic Bluffs living community at 2111 W. 11th St., this half-mile trail surrounding Majestic Bluffs Lake provides a walk with a view of the countryside including eagles, turkeys, ducks, fish and deer. Twin fountains, illuminated at dusk, add to the beauty of the setting. A walk around Majestic Bluffs Lake at sunset is a sight to behold. Trailhead to Paddlewheel Point Trail - .4 miles, 10 wide concrete, flat grade. The Trailhead is located west of the Yankton Chamber & Visitors Center, 803 E. 4th St. Following the Marne Creek from the Trailhead to the Missouri River, this section of trail features native plantings, which are identified with numbered guideposts. When you reach Paddlewheel Point, take a short jaunt to the shores of the Missouri River for a beautiful view of the river in its natural state. Miller Creek Trail - .75 miles, 10 wide primitive dirt surface, varied grade to moderate inclines. This nature hiking trail located in the Miller Creek area of the Nebraska Lewis & Clark Recreation Area offers a view of sites where Lewis & Clark and the Corps of Discovery Expedition camped in 1804 and 1806. Enjoy nature and beautiful scenery as you wind through trees and grasslands high above the shores of Lewis & Clark Lake. South Shore Trail - 3.5 miles, 10 wide primitive dirt surface, varied grade with moderate inclines. This nature trail in the South Shore area of the Nebraska Lewis & Clark Recreation Area welcomes equestrian riders, hikers and mountain bikers. This scenic, heavily wooded trail winds around and through hills. A highlight of this trail is a half-mile long sec- Our bait will catch fish... or die tryin 31 4 Miles West on New Hwy 52 665-4271 Home of the Big Bobber Floating Cooler Trailhead to Riverside Park Trail - 1.5 miles, 10 wide concrete from the Trailhead near Yankton Chamber & Visitors Center to River- side Park, 8 wide asphalt in park, flat grade. This section of the trail follows Marne Creek to the Missouri River and then meanders along the Missouri River through beautiful Riverside Park. In Riverside Park, located on Yankton s South edge between Mulberry Street and Broadway Avenue along Levee Street, view the Dakota Territorial Capitol Replica, a sculpture of Captain Grant Marsh, who was a famous riverboat captain in the 1860s and a beautiful sculpture by nationally renowned artist Dale Lamphere. Amenities within the park include a picturesque baseball stadium, softball field, picnic shelters, play equipment, dock facilities, fishing pier and an amphitheatre where free public concerts are held each Tuesday evening June through August. Westside Park to West City Limits Road Trail - .75 miles, 8 wide asphalt, flat grade. Stretching from Westside Park, located at West 5th Street and Summit Street, to the western edge of Yankton, this trail will take you by the Mount Marty College campus and the Dakota Territorial Museum. Westside Park features plenty of shade, a beautiful manmade lake, ducks and geese, a fishing pond for kids, play equipment, basketball courts, tennis courts, skateboard park, picnic shelters and restrooms.
