The 18 display tanks in the aquarium are entertaining and educational. Fish, reptiles and amphibians of 50 species are on display. The huge snapping turtle and the albino catfish are favorites of both adults and children. The touchscreen kiosk allows you to find the state records of Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota fish. Stroll around some of the 36 ponds where eight species of game fish are being reared. The ponds offer great opportunities for bird watching and viewing frogs, turtles, dragonflies and other wildlife attracted to the water. The hatchery raises endangered Pallid sturgeon and threatened paddlefish. Future broodstock of the Pallid sturgeon are also housed at the hatchery. Guided tours of the sturgeon buildings can be arranged by contacting the hatchery. The hatchery is one of 70 National Fish Hatcheries or Fish Technology Centers in the United States. Help out the hatchery by joining Friends of Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery. The friends group, a 501c3 charitable organization, helps with events, maintenance and funding of hatchery projects.
