Press & Dakotan/2011 Lewis & Clark Lake Guide Enjoy The Lewis & Clark Recreation Area Lewis and Clark Recreation Area is South Dakota s largest state campground with over 400 total campsites and 17 camping cabins. The park hosted 1 million visitors and 52,000 camping units in 2010, making Lewis and Clark Recreation Area the third most visited South Dakota attraction after Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park. Lewis and Clark Lake is a big draw for most visitors, however, other popular park features including scenic bike trails, hiking trails, beaches, picnic shelters and weekend park programs also add to the family outdoor recreation experience. Three swimming beaches and four boat ramps located throughout Lewis and Clark Recreation Area provide access to Lewis and Clark Lake. A 28-target archery range, 5 mile equestrian trail, and 1.2 mile nature trail can be found in the trails section at the west end of the park. The concession area at the east end of the park features Lewis and Clark Marina (one of the largest in the Midwest), Magilly s Lakeside Eatery, and Lewis & Clark Resort with beautiful lakeside lodging facilities. Pierson Ranch and Chief White Crane Recreation Areas located downstream of Gavins Point Dam feature 213 campsites and 12 camping cabins. Pierson Ranch features a large day use area with playgrounds, a combination tennis/basketball court, softball, horseshoes, volleyball, soccer and two picnic shelters (one with a kitchenette), which is excellent for company picnics and large family gatherings. The campground s modern bathrooms with hot showers are located within easy walking distance of all campsites. Chief White Crane lies on the shores of Lake Yankton and is in close proximity to the Missouri River and Gavins Point Dam. Two nearby boat ramps offer an excellent opportunity for some great fishing. A one-mile crushed asphalt trail skirts the campground. Large, mature cottonwood trees provide excellent shade for the campground and a roosting area for bald eagles during the winter. This year we are promoting the national Children in Nature initiative aimed at getting families outdoors. Bring the family out to the park and go fishing, camping, hiking or swimming. We hope you enjoy your stay! Shane Bertsch, District Park Supervisor, Lewis and Clark Recreation Area MORE ON LEWIS & CLARK REC AREA,Page 8 please Welcome To Yankton!
