CAREER & EDUCATION 2011 ~ 5 ~ Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan Thousands To Be Awarded During Scholarship Weekends High school students who plan to attend Morningside College in the fall of 2012 and those still considering the possibility are strongly encouraged to register to attend one of Morningside College s Celebration of Excellence scholarship weekends. Besides the thousands of dollars available in academic and other talent scholarships, these weekends have been designed to offer one of the best campus visit opportunities of the school year. Morningside values the students that we re recruiting, said Sue Pyburn, associate director of admissions. We want the scholarship process to be a good taste of what student life is like, and we want it to be a time to celebrate all that the students have accomplished. During a scholarship weekend, students arrive at Morningside on a Friday. They spend the night in the residence halls. Then scholarship interviews and auditions take place on Saturday. Also on Saturday, prospective students and their parents are able to ask current students, faculty and staff about the academic and extracurricular opportunities on campus. Maggie Johnson attended a scholarship weekend last year, and she is now a freshman at Morningside College. She said her scholarship weekend started with pizza and socializing. Then she met the Morningside students who would be her roommates for the evening, and she went with them to a local bowling alley. I got to experience what college life would be like, and I also got to meet tons of people, Johnson said. I m still great friends with the people I met that weekend. We still will joke around about what we did that night. Johnson said she was nervous for her audition for a flute scholarship, but the audition ended up being very relaxed. She said she got to talk with the band directors, and she found herself laughing and joking around with them. Jon Hoaglund also attended a scholarship weekend last year. He said he enjoyed being interviewed for an academic scholarship because it gave him the opportunity to talk about his achievements in high school. He also said the scholarship money he earned that weekend made Morningside College very affordable. My education here is pretty inexpensive compared to what it would be otherwise, Hoaglund said. So if there s any chance that you could get a scholarship, there s no reason not to come to a scholarship weekend. High school students who attend a scholarship weekend may be rewarded for talent in areas ranging from art, mock trial, theatre, music or athletics, including cheerleading and dance, to more general areas like leadership or community service. To access a full list of the scholarship opportunities, go online to http://www.morningside.edu/admissions/pages/ScholarshipW eekends.htm. Upcoming scholarship weekends will be Nov. 18-19, Jan. 20-21, Feb. 3-4, Feb. 24-25 and March 16-17. Before high school students can register to attend a scholarship weekend or be nominated for particular scholarships, they must first apply and be admitted to Morningside College.
