Standing off to the side as other teams collected hardware. With 10 returning state placewinners nine of which were from last season and a host of young talent, the Yankton Bucks and Gazelles hope to replace that feeling with the joy of finishing at or near the top. Yankton opened the 2012 track and field season on March 20 looking to get back in the top four of Class AA after the boys team finished 10th and the girls team finished 11th a year ago. We weren t thrilled with how things went last year. That place off the podium is not a place we want to be in, Youmans said. We challenged our kids that they need to make it back on the podium. The Bucks and Gazelles open at the Bob Prince Indoor, the first of two indoor meets in a surprisingly mild spring. I can t count the times I ve had to catch myself to keep from gloating about how nice this spring has been, Youmans said.
