PRESS & DAKOTAN / PLAIN TALK FALL SPORTS 2012 PAGE 17 USD Volleyball Will Have Different Look, Feel In 2012 BY JEREMY HOECK jeremy.hoeck@yankton.net VERMILLION Most of the same faces are back, but there figures to be a noticeable difference around the University of South Dakota volleyball team this season. Not only are the Coyotes now eligible for the Summit League and NCAA tournaments, but the program will have a new home for matches inside the DakotaDome. USD moves from the football field to a new setup upstairs in the dome this season. Combined, 2012 should have the feel of something new, according to fifth-year head coach Matt Houk. There s a different flavor to this season, Houk said. The past four years it was really about doing as well as you can do under the circumstances. At the same time, you wanted to go out and challenge yourselves so that by the time you get to year five, you re competitive. It just doesn t seem like it should be here already. The Coyotes return 10 players who saw playing time last season on a team that finished 14-18 overall and 7-11 in its first year in the Summit League. The next step, now, is to crack the conference s top four teams to advance to the league tournament. Everyone s really excited right now. We re all anxious to get back out there and prove that we can get to the tournament, senior outside hitter Kim Bulaga said. That s one of our biggest goals, to get there. That s all we ve been talking about. Among the highlights from last year were a win over a major conference school (Oregon State) and a sweep over South Dakota State. There was, however, no post-season reward for such accomplishments. At the same time, does it not add some pressure to this season? There hasn t been that pressure on this program yet, Houk said. If you lost, there was no recourse. It s all different now, because you re fighting for the playoffs. That s what you want. USD returns five of top six hitters from a year ago, its top two setters and four of its top five digs leaders. Keying the offense will be Kendall Kritenbrink (So., 465 kills), Amber Aschoff (Jr., 268 kills), Natalie Walseth (Jr., 258 kills) and Bulaga (152 kills). Southern Illinois LAST YEAR: 4-7 (2-6 MVFC) Most teams that claim their season was a rebuilding year have not experienced what the University of South Dakota women s soccer program faced in the 2011 season. In fact, no other NCAA Division I program has. Last season, the USD women s soccer team set an NCAA record for the most freshmen on a non-first year Div. I team with 21 new players and 19 of them freshmen. That wasn t an ideal situation, but we just had so many people who couldn t continue their career or that graduated, third year USD head coach Mandy Green said. After my first season, we had to basically recruit a brand new team. The Coyotes, who finished 1-15-3 overall and 1-7-1 in the Summit League, had to face the struggles of grooming almost an entire team of newcomers with very few upperclassmen. With no fewer than seven freshmen on the field at all times, Coach Green is quite happy with the outcome of last season, even if their record does not represent their progress. We didn t get the result we wanted but we were so close in so many games, she said. Now looking forward to the new season, Green thinks the possibilities for success are so much greater, especially with almost everyone returning and the experience they bring with them. Not only is the team s fitness level up after the year of training, but also their confidence and competitiveness. The girls are lot more confident than they were at this time last year, Green said. We re being a heck of a lot more competitive and intense and we re picking up things a lot quicker in practices this year. Everything is just running a lot smoother than it did last year just because we have so many returning. Some of those returning who Green looks to for leadership on and off the field are captains Erin Bello, Rachel Greene, Mackenzie Viktor, and Makena Cameron. Bello and Greene, both mid-fielders, return as the team s only two seniors. Bello led the Coyotes last season with five goals on the year, including a hat trick in the final matchup with Oral Roberts. Viktor and Cameron, on the other U SOCCER | PAGE 18 transfers...SIU and Miami (Ohio) were both originally scheduled to play Missouri in 2012, but conflicts brought them together for the Sept. 8 game.
