PRESS & DAKOTAN / PLAIN TALK FALL SPORTS 2012 PAGE 19 Climer, Lancers Hope Experience Helps Turn Things Around BY JILANNE DOOM sports@yankton.net Coming back after a season of tough breaks, the Mount Marty Lancer volleyball team is using their past experiences to learn from to make the 2012 season that much better. Last fall, the Lancers found themselves in more than enough stressful five-set matches. In a total of six five-setters, they fell to their opponent each time, several of them by only two points. But despite their overall record of 6-26, the Lancers found success in other smaller parts of the game that do not necessarily show up in the winloss columns. I was trying to tell the girls that it's the little stuff that we need to look at that we've done like winning more sets, which was an improvement for us, Mount Marty head coach Candice Climer said. So we improved in the little areas that we can see and the overall picture was seeing the stats and what they've done for our record. So they did a lot of things that showed up on paper just not in the win column. But those close losses won't be overlooked by any means for the returners who experienced those frustrating matches. Senior outside hitter Amanda Dirksen hopes those losses will be a motivator for her team this year to come out on top the next time they face a deciding fifth set. Just playing in those and trying to get the five-set wins - ever since those happened we have been doing whatever we can to work towards that and carrying it over to this year, she said. This year will be another season to continue building the Mount Marty volleyball program which has been steadily improving since Climer became head coach three seasons ago. The Lancers, who won two more matches last season than their 2010 campaign and hope to move even further along this year, know it is a difficult road to improvement, especially at the collegiate level. They know that it's going to take a while to build a program, Climer said. They know it's not going to just happen overnight. For this season, we have three strong seniors that worked with us in the off season. So these girls have been working for this all year long. Those three seniors who will take over the leadership role left open by the Lancers' former standout Carlie Lambert are middle blocker Kate Lingscheit, setter Tina Rowbotham, and Dirksen. Along with the three senior captains, two players who will stand out for Mount Marty are backside Lancers Volleyball 8/25 Alumni Match (Exh) 3 pm 8/28 @ Grace 8 pm 1 8/31 vs. Mayville State 10 am 8/31 vs. York1 4 pm 9/1 vs. Sioux Falls1 2 pm 4 pm 9/1 vs. Jamestown1 9/4 Dakota State 7 pm 9/7 Mayville State/@ UM-Morris 6/8 pm 9/11 Briar Cliff 7:30 p.m. 9/13 @ College of St. Mary 7 pm 9/15 Doane 1:30 pm 9/17 @ Dakota State 7 pm 9/19 @ Dordt 7:30 pm 9/22 @ Midland 1:30 pm 9/25 @ Dakota Wesleyan 7:30 pm 9/28 Buena Vista 7:30 pm 9/28 Nebraska Wesleyan 1:30 pm 10/3 Northwestern 7:30 pm 10/6 @ Concordia 3 pm 10/9 @ Morningside 7:30 pm 10/11 Grace 7:30 pm 10/13 Hastings 3 pm 10/16 Dordt 7:30 p.m. 2 10/19 vs. Valley City State 8 pm 11:30 am 10/20 vs. Mayville State2 10/20 @ Waldorf College2 1 pm 10/23 @ Briar Cliff 7:30 pm 10/26 @ Presentation 7 pm 10/27 Midland 1:30 pm 10/30 @ Northwestern 7:30 pm 11/1 Dakota Wesleyan 7:30 pm 11/3 @ Doane 1:30 pm 1 DWU Tourn.; 2 Waldorf Tourn. Lots of soccer players. Lancer head coach Nathan Epp brought in 15 new players for the 2012 season. Add to that 10 returners from last season and seemingly half of the males on campus play soccer for the Lancers. It is an exciting time for Epp and his team after struggled through 2011, losing 15 consecutive games following an openingseason victory. For the first time in his short stint at Mount Marty, second-year coach Epp will have the depth needed to keep his players fresh. We will be young but the ability is there, Epp said. All-GPAC honorable mention selections Chandler Olmo and Dane Hansen are key losses from last year s squad. Also missing will be Lancer career assists leader Carlos Saenz and Brandon Frey, although both will still be around this season as coaches, Saenz as the new Lancer assistant coach and Frey as a student-assistant. Freshman Ludwin Arana, a defender from South Sioux City, Nebraska and transfer Ricardo Marroquin, a junior from Lexington, Nebraska are top newcomers expected to fill in for the departed seniors from last year s team. Attacking midfielder Jose Marques, forwards Josh Koch and Tyler Neu, and defender Peter Shepherd are all seniors whom Epp expects to step up and lead. Our goal is to qualify for the GPAC postseason, Epp said. It will depend on how we come together as a team. The Lancers open their fall campaign against York, Nebraska in York on August 28. Their first home match will be September 22 against Doane.
