PAGE 10 PRESS & DAKOTAN n MONDAY, JANUARY 18, 2016 Yankton High School Home of the Bucks and Gazelles Volume 95, Number 4 Senior Editor s Note As well as welcoming a new year, I will be welcoming a final semester of my high school career. This semester will offer many challenges for me, more so than the previous ones because I will ultimately be saying goodbye to high school and hello to adulthood. Each year of school, from elementary to where I am now, has had many opportunities and memories that will forever influence my life and who I am. I know everyone says this all the time, and I have to say now that I m truly starting to realize how fast time flies. Peers that I can still picture running around the playground playing recess games with me are now getting accepted to colleges many states away. Friends are moving toward independence, and this last semester will undoubtedly bring about changes for each of us as we step out into the world on our own. My goals this semester are to finish strong and to say goodbye to people who I've grown accustomed to seeing, whom I most likely won t for much longer. Though I m very excited that my chance to bring my dreams to life is finally approaching, I am also heavy-hearted knowing there are many people I will miss. The new semester will be an interesting time for the average senior, and I wish the best of luck to everyone entering their final months of high school. Make it count! -Samantha W. Monday, January 18, 2015 Reflecting Back, Looking Forward BY HOLLY HICKS It seems that once the new year comes around people are content to leave the past year behind them. Yes, some areas of 2015 can be forgotten, but let us not forget these classic moments and life lessons of the past year. 1. In Super Bowl XLIX between the Patriots and Sea- hawks, Left Shark (one of Katy Perry s backup dancers) showed us not to be afraid to bust your own move, even if it s in front of thousands of people. 2. Harper Lee followed up her classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, about 50 years later with Go Set a Watchman, which included an unexpected twist with the beloved character Atticus Finch. 3. Of course, an almost unforgettable event, Star W ars: The Force Awakens came out in theaters in December. 4. Singer Adele produced her third album, 25, and topped Taylor Swift s 1989 as the most purchased album in a matter of a week, selling three million copies in the first week alone wow! 5. This isn t a best moment, but it s still a big deal. America said goodbye to The Late Show with David Letterman. 6. Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed their second bundle of joy, Princess Charlotte! 7. A sad but uniting moment for the whole world was the Paris attacks. It was beautiful to see the world come together and stand as one. 8. LeBron James returned to the Cavaliers, but was upset in the NBA Championship by the Golden State Warriors hello Stephen Curry! As all can see, this past year has had some unforgettable memories, along with laughs and tears. But enough with the past a new year is upon us, filled with a multitude of opportunities. The elections are approaching, and this year seems to be the year for change. As we all enter this new year, let us work to make it a memorable one. New Year, New You BY SAMANTHA WENZLAFF This time of year means time for change. According to statisticbrain.com, 45% of people in the United States frequently make New Year s resolutions. Out of those, nearly half of them are centered toward selfimprovement, while others focus on money or relationships. Though only about 8% of the resolutions are successful, there is a lot of promise in the beginning of the year. Self-improvement can mean a lot of things. For many people it can mean improving oneself physically through exercise. Myrecordjournal.com states that during the months from December through January, gym memberships increase by 20%. Gyms offer new deals for membership prices in order to draw new people in. Usually gyms will offer yearly membership deals; however, most of the new members don t usually last the whole year. Everyone would benefit from a little bit of extra money here and there. Many people make it their MOUNT MARTY Catholic Scholarships at Mount Marty College ST. A lot of people nationwide have a large spending problem, so Reader s Digest has come up with a few tips to help people control their spending. They say that people should divide their money into thirds. The first third goes toward past debts, the second goes to current bills, and the final third goes into a savings for the future. It is very important to save extra money due to surprise bills that pop up, such as medical expenses. Of course, the New Year can also offer a chance to work on one s relationships. The Huffington Post offers several good changes to make in order to help one s love life. The first thing one should make sure they re doing right is communication. One should make sure they are talking to their significant other in ways that are calm and loving rather than resorting to bickering. People in relationships should listen to their partner s complaints, avoid allowing technology to have too much control in their lives, and appreciate their significant other by showing rather than telling. Although the percentage of resolutions that work out is low, the best tip is to stick with them. A new year means a fresh slate to work from, so it s best not to fall into previous bad habits. Most resolutions are toward selfimprovement, so why not use this fresh start as a chance to really create a new you? The Meaning of Valentine s Day BY HARLIE HACECKY Valentine s Day is when some people feel obligated to do something extra special for their significant other. For others it s the day where you get candy and Valentines at school or work. But Valentine s Day should be about more than just candy and hearts. Valentine s Day is a day in February when a person sends a card or gesture to someone they are attracted to. Valentine s Day is more than that, though; it s about sharing love and appreciation for those who are in need, have done good for you in your life, or who are special in your heart. For instance, show your best friend how much he or she means to you for always being by your side, helping you out when you are in a bind, or making you laugh when you need it most. Or tell your kids that you love them and that they mean the world to you. Family has a very special place in your heart and should always be your first and most important Valentine. When someone is having a bad day, show them they are appreciated; there s no better way to do that than by giving Valentines. On Valentine s Day, no one should feel unloved. No one should be forgotten. Don t just look forward to being someone else's Valentine, be the person to spread the love. Let s give Valentine s Day a deeper meaning!
