PAGE 14 PRESS & DAKOTAN Volume 95, Number 7 MONDAY, APRIL 18, 2016 Monday, April 18, 2016 A Ten: YHS Yearbook Superior BY SAMMI SIMONSEN n 2006, President George Bush was in office, and the Yankton High School won its first of ten consecutive All-State awards. On Wednesday, April 13, the YHS yearbook staff and their adviser Jill Mikkelsen attended Press Days at South Dakota State University. The staff attended breakout sessions on photography, writing and on-the-spot contests. Over 200 students from the state of South Dakota attended the conference. The day was capped off by an awards ceremony where the students and adviser found out they had won their tenth top award. Editor Manny Valadez, senior, said, The day was really exciting especially when we found out we had won. But the accolades didn t stop there. Brooks Bowman, from the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) had one more award to hand out. Each year, a Superior Yearbook award is given to the yearbook that has the highest overall score. On Thursday, the staff found out that their name was on the award. In fact, the journalists were five points away from a perfect score. We were pleasantly surprised, Mikkelsen said. It was totally unexpected, but looking back at the book, I can see why the judges really liked it. The 2014-2015 theme was This is Yankton. Editors of the book were Valadez and Haylee Worm. The staff is now diligently working on the 2015-2016 yearbook Our Big Journey. The work began in August and will end in June. Since yearbook is an extracurricular activity, the staff meets after school two days a week. We put our blood, sweat, and tears into every book, Valadez said. Highlights of the current book include the state football championship, a photo of every senior in the graduating class and Cats. We are going in a different direction this year, editor Ashley Lacey, senior, said. We are using a vintage map for the cover and custom designed compasses throughout the book. Our graphics will work so well with our journey theme. Staff members include Sammi Simonsen (student life editor), Erin Olson (activities editor), Piper Mikkelsen (sports editor), Kate Katterhagen (academics editor), Austin Jerke, Marielle Logue, Nathan Sangster, Kathy Garcia, Lauren Jensen, Alexa McNatt and Sophia Vyborny. 2015-2016 yearbooks are now on sale until April 25th. Books can be purchased by contacting Mrs. Mikkelsen at YHS or online at www.Balfour.com. 2015-2016 YHS Yearbook Staff. Front row: Manny Valadez and Ashley Lacey.
