PRESS & DAKOTAN PAGE 5 MONDAY, MAY 16, 2016 Volume 95, Number 8 Monday, May 16, 2016 An Artistic Endeavor As a sophomore at Yankton High School I have had two years of art classes taught by Peter Deming. I ve always been interested in art of all types but never imagined I would excel at it. This year I am enrolled in Drawing and Painting, and it is a much more focused art class. In this class we have done projects such as realistic graphite portraits, abstract paintings taken from real life images, watercolors, linoleum block carvings and art in the subconscious. Over the course of the year I learned what types of mediums and styles of art I personally like. During the last half semester we are partaking in an independent study. Independent study is designed to allow students to pursue different styles of art and to learn about techniques. For my independent study I wanted to learn more about possible art careers, and I became really intrigued by murals. I mentioned this to Mr. Deming and he immedi- ately came up with the idea to use a wall in his classroom as my canvas. He asked if I would be interested and said I could choose a friend to do the project with me. I took on the project, and another sophomore, Hanna Eide, agreed to help me. Together, Hanna and I have been working on the mural for about a month and a half. It is located on the wall of the old darkroom. The mural is about 6 feet by 6 feet. Hanna and I consult each other for opinions but ultimately trust each other s artistic ability to make the choices that will improve the mural. It has been a blast working with Hanna, and we have gotten to know one another better through this process. The concept we wanted to incorporate in the mural was to have it centered around Yankton High School and all the classes and activities offered. These include mathematics, English, science, art, world history, geography, theater, athletics and band, along with others. The whole idea of our mural is to have each subject mat- ter flow into the next to portray that each subject helps the next. Hanna and I discussed that we wanted each symbol for the subjects to mean something deeper. Our final statement is that all the subjects work together and benefit from each other in order to make a well balanced education. We wanted to make this mural special and meaningful so we ourselves could feel accomplished, but a lot of credit goes to Mr. Deming. Without him we would never have had the opportunity to do this project or even to fall in love with the arts. This project has vastly deepened my respect for artists and all they must think about and plan. It has opened Hanna and me up to a new world and the idea of art careers for a possible future. I believe this project will never be forgotten by either Hanna or me, and we both feel fortunate to be a part of it. IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES PHOTOGRAPHY BY JERRY Congratulations Seniors!
