When I asked why I had gotten the B (there were no corrections on my paper) she ex- plained that it was unbelievable. I asked if I could prove it to her would she raise my grade. I therefore, invited Grandpa to my final basketball game to which he brought his cowbell. You can imagine what happened in the gym that night. I also introduced him to my English teacher. I got my A! A GREAT PLACE TO RAISE A YANKTON 150: PAGE 7D FAMILY: I have been very fortunate to have been raised in this area. All four branches of my family s history had come to the Dakota Territory in the 1860s. I have traced the Fejfar s, Kostel s, Borszich s, and Lukes history through the Yankton Press and Dakotan among other sources. My great-great-grandfather, Frank Fejfar brought his family to the Dakota s in 1868 or so after he and Anna Fejfar Vinatieri crossed the Missouri, my great-greatgrandfather, Simon Borszich came from Poland, and my greatgreat-grandfathers, Lukes and Kostel came from Czechoslovakia, at about the same time. Thanks to the P&D, I have been able to collect many stories from their early days. VIRGINIA VANDERHULE BRAMBLE (Written in her family history) On May 5th, 1862 we reached Yankton coming from New York to a higher and drier climate for father s health. Their first home consisted of one room downstairs and one in the half-story upstairs. Father borrowed carpenter tools to make table, stools, beds and kitchen cupboard shelves for us, and the first scrubbing I ever did was on my knees at that dreadful floor, but it was a nucleus for a home and we were appreciative.
